Sand Dune Adventures

No visit to Port Stephens is complete unless you drop in on the infamous Stockton Sand Dunes. These are officially the largest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. The sand is constantly shifting by approximately 10 metres a year in some areas they measure as wide as 1 km and over 30 m high.
There are numerous adventure companies that can provide guided tours for exploration. 4WD, quad bike or even horse/camel riding adds to the diversity and excitement. For those not interested in adventure activities the dunes have dramatic visual impact and are well worth taking a look.

Local Markets

Each week numerous local markets are held throughout the region and include Anna Bay, Medowie, Nelson Bay, Tomaree & Tanilba.

Tomaree National Park

Tomaree National Park conserves coastal bushland, sand dunes, heathland, forest areas and over 20 kilometres of rocky coastline and beaches. It is 50 kilometres north of Newcastle, fringing the towns and villages of Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Boat Harbour and Anna Bay. There are excellent opportunities for bushwalking, swimming, snorkelling, surfing, fishing and picnicking.t

Dolphin Watching

The ecological balance in the bay is perfect for dolphins so you are almost guaranteed to see, and even swim with them if you take a cruise on one of the tour boats. Unsurprisingly, this area is known as the Dolphin capital of Australia and between 150 and 200 bottlenose dolphins live in the water. Feel the thrill of being up close to the wild dolphins, they have the most complex behaviour in the animal world and are extremely intelligent animals. These factors make dolphins a marvel to watch.

Whale Watching

The whale watching season is from the end of May to mid November when over 8,000 Humpback whales swim past Port Stephens on their annual migration north to the warmer waters of the South Pacific Ocean. After breeding they migrate with their calves back to the Southern Ocean and the cold waters of the Antarctic. The local tour operators give you the chance to see these magnificent creatures close up which is an experience that you will remember for ever! Your whale watching cruise will also have a great opportunity for dolphin spotting.

Beaches

As with many coastal communities in Australia, beaches are a main feature of Port Stephens. The beaches in Port Stephens have panoramic views, some with calm waters and others with powerful surf much like most beaches in Australia, but without the crowds. Even in the height of summer, there is no struggling to find a prime place to lay in the sun. With plenty of beaches to choose from along with activities like Surf School, Sea Kayaking, Jetsking, Parasailing or Fishing there is something here for everyone.

Local Marine Discovery

Port Stephens is home to large aquatic reserves which ensure some of the best snorkelling & diving in New South Wales. With easy access to a variety of shore snorkelling/dive sites, boat and wreck dive sites, you can find something that suits your need for fun and adventure. Hop on board with a local tour operator or hire your own equipment to take up an adventure for yourself.

Golf Courses

Experience the challenge of playing on a course with velvety greens, hazardous waterways & undulating fairways. With three champion courses to choose from you will sure to find a challenge.

Helicopter Flights

Experience the beauty of Port Stephens from above on board one of the local helicopter operators, with several scenic tours available, ranging from a 10 minute scenic flight to lunch in the scenic Hunter Valley vineyards to picnic on a deserted beach, there is definitely something to suit everyone.
